Care that builds independence

Support the person, not just the task.

Mental health support often means helping somebody regain or maintain structure, confidence, routine, connection and independence.

You’ll listen properly, show up reliably and encourage rather than take over. The role needs patience, consistency and emotional maturity, along with respect for each person’s autonomy and the judgement to recognise when additional support may be needed.

Your working day

Practical support. Consistency. Encouragement.

Every care plan is different. The aim is to provide the right support for that individual, never to assume everybody needs the same things.

01

Routines

Help somebody establish or maintain a daily routine that works for them.

02

Everyday tasks

Prepare food, shop, maintain the home and provide personal care where the individual care plan requires it.

03

Appointments

Support somebody to attend medical or other appointments and use local services.

04

Community

Go for a walk, attend a group or activity, and build confidence with leaving the house.

05

Goals

Encourage hobbies, relationships and agreed personal goals without taking over.

06

Wellbeing

Notice changes, record information and communicate concerns through the agreed support arrangements.

What good support looks like

Being steady when life doesn’t feel straightforward.

Dependable support is calm, respectful and consistent. It creates room for the person to make choices, try things at their own pace and stay connected with everyday life.

You are not expected to be a therapist or mental health clinician.

Your role is to provide dependable day-to-day support, follow the person’s care plan and work within Aurora’s support arrangements.

  • Showing up consistently and creating predictability
  • Listening without judgement and communicating calmly
  • Respecting professional boundaries and giving somebody time
  • Encouraging choice while recognising when somebody needs space
  • Following the agreed care plan and Aurora procedures
  • Noticing changes in wellbeing and seeking support appropriately

Younger adult support

A life to live, not a list of care tasks.

Support for younger adults may look very different from traditional home care. It can mean helping somebody leave the house, reconnect with hobbies, attend appointments, cook, shop, maintain friendships or access volunteering, education or work where appropriate.

The focus is on enabling rather than taking over, supporting the person to work towards goals that matter to them without promising a particular outcome.

Routine Confidence Community Connection Choice Independence

Who you are matters

Calm, dependable and comfortable being yourself.

01

Reliable

Consistency can be particularly important to the people you support.

02

Patient

Progress may not always happen quickly or predictably.

03

Non-judgemental

Respect people’s experiences, choices and individuality.

04

Emotionally steady

Remain calm when somebody is anxious, withdrawn or having a difficult day.

05

A good communicator

Know how to listen as well as talk.

06

Comfortable with boundaries

Build positive professional relationships without becoming over-involved.

07

Observant

Notice changes in presentation, routine or wellbeing and report appropriately.

08

Encouraging

Support people to do things for themselves wherever possible.

09

Independent

Work confidently one-to-one in somebody’s home or community.
